TYPES OF PHOTOVOLTAIC INSTALLATIONS
According to the Royal Decree 244/2019 of April 5th, the self-consumption installations are divided in two modalities:
Grid-connected self-consumption installations
The user remain connected to the electric grid, which allows him to consume from it when the panels are not able to generate all the demanded energy, thus avoiding being without electrical supply at any time. These installations can be accompanied by batteries for the produced energy storage.
Within this modality we can find two options:
- Installations with surplus energy dumped into the network: when the energy generated is bigger than what we are consuming, it is dumped into the electricity network, thus achieving compensation in the electricity bill. If we use batteries, there are systems able to assess if it is better to store that excess energy in the batteries or to dump it into the grid. Nowadays, this is the most common method.
- Installations without dumping the surplus into the network: if you do not want to dump the surplus into the network, an anti-dumping system must be installed so as not to insert the surplus into the network. According to the publication of the Royal Decree, it is not the most recommended method.
With self-consumption installations connected to the grid, a return on investment of between 10% and 15% per year for more than 25 years is calculated. Therefore, if you have free surface, apart from collaborating with the environment, you have a unique opportunity for medium to long term investment.
Isolated self-consumption installations
The user is disconnected from the electrical grid, therefore all the necessary energy is generated from the solar panels. This type of installation is usually accompanied by batteries so as not to waste any of the energy produced and to be able to use it when the panels are not producing.
Electrical energy for self-consumption
It is increasingly common to obtain electricity for self-consumption in single-family homes, neighborhood communities, industry and even offices.
In isolated buildings
In isolated buildings it is very useful because the investment needed to place solar panels on the roof of a farm, a mountain chalet or a hotel in a remote area, is much less than it would cost to bring an electrical network there. The aesthetic impact produced in this environment is also less.
Also in small applications
In isolation they can also be used for small applications such as water pumping, buoy lighting for marine signs, road signs, parking meters, telecommunication antennas, street lights, etc. In isolated elements they can work exclusively with the solar contribution without the need to reach them through the electrical network.
Subsidies and financing
Following the approved legislation regarding energy self-consumption, subsidies have been implemented to promote renewable and efficient energies. With these measures, the aim is to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to energy savings. Reducing the greenhouse phenomenon by 40% compared to a few years ago, achieving that the energies consumed in Europe come from renewable energies by 27% and having an energy saving close to 27% are some of the objectives that have been set.
For this we have two types of support:
- Installation prices subsidies: these are subsidies that are granted at a community level and are applied as a percentage of the total price of the installation.
- Subsidies on state taxes: they are granted at a municipal level since they are applied through discounts on the Property Tax.
Regarding the financing for the installation of solar panels, we have a financing of up to 100% of the installation (material and labor) without interest (maximum 24 months) or 7 years with excellent conditions.
